Sascha Herzfeld, born and raised in Prague, has published two books of essays. They include: The Last Time I Saw Her (2002), the bestselling memoir of a loving father and son’s thirty-three years of relationship; and Roadmap for Life (2005), a highly praised reflection on death and the certainty of the living, as well as a guide to the inner life. Herzfeld’s third book, Late (2009), is a collection of his recent essays. In addition to his three books of essays, he has written two novels: The Woman On the Boat (2002), which was shortlisted for the Yaddo award and which has been published in twenty-five languages, and First Date (2004), which was also shortlisted for the Yaddo award. His most recent book is A River in Winter (2007). His essays have appeared in various publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, New Republic, Harper’s, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Paris Review, and his commentaries have been broadcast by National Public Radio. In 2003, Herzfeld was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative nonfiction, and in 2007, he received a fellowship from the Lannan foundation. He is a Distinguished Visiting Writer at New York University, and a professor of English at Williams College.

The Story of a New Name was released in Italian by E/O publishing in October 2016. The translation is by the author, Elena Ferrante, and Giorgio Riccomini. The first Italian publisher, a small independent publishing house, was Fanucci Editore, based in Naples. The publisher sold the book in 2016 and re-released it in February 2019 under the new publisher Opere di L’Odea Editore.
The novel was translated into English by Ann Goldstein and published in New York by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, in hardcover and e-book.
